 Complete Abstraction

This painting started out as a bit of an abstract painting with a dark background with bright colours on it. Its a large canvas so needed something dramatic

I overpainted it soon after with a calm wave themed painting, and thats how it sat on a shelf for months, forgotten.

Ive been painting abstract painting for a while now and was really happy with something Id painted, again, on a previously twice painted canvas, and had made it more industrial and just different.

Starting on this canvas, it went from waves, to a rainbow and into the pink explosion of colour it is now

Hope you like it

 Industrial

Ive been painting a lot of abstract art recently, and im in two minds about it. I like the colours and the less controlled painting style, but it feels like Im not focusing on realism or reflecting something other people can see and recognise, like coastlines, flowers or mountains.

In the other hand, I love the freedom to just feel the art - yes that sounds really contrived - but its the only way I can describe the feeling when dabbing colours onto a canvas representing water falling or a ray of light or, as in this one, the distress of the surface of a industrial surface, with splashes of red that could be rust or blood, and a hark back to the gilded history with the silver brass and gold splash at the bottom and flecks of it above

its helping clear my thoughts so thats a good thing for me

what do you think

this is a section of the panel

its a long and thin canvas so is almost a door panel in size so quite dramatic

 Selling Art

Its such a lovely feeling the receive positive reviews and comments from a satisfied buyer.  I have always had a feeling that my art was not great, and being honest a lot of it isn't, and not just the early stuff, but seeing positive comments is lovely to receive

You can see them on my Etsy site from a buyer in Europe of this painting

Thank you !!

 For Sale

I wasn't going to sell this as it was a description of a journey from fire through wild colour into an industrial landscape, but decided to

(see previous post)

I write like the end result and think a much larger version would also look nice so I think Ill get a larger canvas and try

its available on my Etsy site ianhammondart.etsy.com

 Evolution of a painting

I like trying different things and techniques as I am still learning about all of this stuff but im getting there

This is its evolution

 Something Different

Thought I would paint something very different although its also quite similar to what I have painted before

Its called Melting Reality and reflects how ive sometimes seen reality in my head, focused and unfocused, bright and also dripping as if it were wax from a candle

 artwork

its been a nice year getting my art onto Etsy, starting my website, and getting this blog going

and ive sold 4 paintings - and I am so very grateful for the people who found my art on Etsy and thought that thats what you want on your wall and went through the joy of the Etsy payment system.

I hope that the people who received the paintings like them.

and if they don't, thats a real shame

but then next year even more to paint and hopefully sell

 Weekend Focus

I need to focus on finishing this painting, thats about the largest I produce really.  The Sunflower isn't really how I want it to look, but I like the background.

Just a time to let the colour and shape flow rather than forcing it which is what I think I did to get it to this stage

 Weekend

I had a relaxing day today, spending time at my daughters grave and then with my son, at a lovely place near the river I try to get to as often as I can.

Its a lovely location and so quiet with just birds and the rustle of the wind through the leaves that interrupts you whilst sitting there.

Nice lunch after.

 More abstration

After a day of not feeling well, I finished this piece which is based on another artists work, came MaryAnneShakyHand who created geometric art which I think is lovely

It helps me to focus when my attention span is all over the place, and I love how the flow of colour on the page is enhanced by the individual colours in the geometric shapes.

This one is in pen an dink with the colour from coloured watercolour pencils, but the next one to do is one with acrylic paint as well, just to see the contract

Water and fire

I have just finished "The forty rules of Love" by Elif Shafak.  An enjoyable book, with many twists and turns, but mainly about journeys, following what you believe or feel is right, and in the end, love

Love this from the last page

Life is the water of life and a lover is a soul of fire

I like that definition.

"The universe turns differently when fire loves water"

 Weekends rest

Its almost the weekend, and time to rest and recover, without the early starts, travelling, long days and late nights back.

To spend some time with these lovelies will be a pleasure

the week after my mums ashes were spread in the sea from the beach she loved

Many things make you realise how fragile life is, and how easy it is to just meander along without a care and suddenly everything changes.

So, enjoy the rest this weekend. I for one will be doing some art and watching rugby, and reading book 3 of the Book of Dust series by Philip Pullman

Patterns and Shapes

I haven't really done any artwork for a while but I've been doodling with pen on paper as going to try some line art, shapes and architectural type of lines to bring out the picture I have in my head.

Back working full time so a bit knackered in the week to do anything, so it'll be weekend activity really.

I want to make pictures without shading, without any forced texture and only use parallel lines to see how it turns out

wish me luck.

I sometimes find my lack of art training catches me out and shows my inexperience and lack of ability, but on the other hand im quite happy to try anything - well, except for oil painting.  think I need to do something formal with that so that its not a bogeyman for me as it currently is

 Abstraction

If you've been looking at my website (https://www.ianhammondart.co.uk) you'll have seen that most of my most recent work has been abstract art, mixing rainbows, nature and geometric shapes in various ways.

Part of this is because when emotionally I'm in lots of places, it helps me to relax and almost feel the colours and put them onto the canvas or paper, but also its acknowledging the importance of all of the shades and colours to life, and that they are all connected.

Thats not meant to be pretentious.  It's about shades of colour across all parts of nature, with no one colour being dominant across the board.

So I started playing with colour, trying different things.  I saw an amazing artist on Instagram,  called Maryanne Shakyhand (www.gabbagallery.com) who creates amazing geometric pictures, and so I did a bit of that sort of art, but also flowing rainbows of colour, either as solid flows or lines of individual colour.

Below are some of these

Im enjoying the less restricted painting style in the latest works, but the geometric style does help my mind to both fly and focus at the same time, which is good at times when its in the wind

Have a look at the other stuff on my website. I hope you like them.  Feel free to comment

Autumn Storms and Sunshine

I had a lovely walk yesterday walking in the fields, between the rain storms and high wind flying. The colour of the clouds on either side were in stark contrast to each other, with rain pouring out of the sky, as well as rainbows lifting up from the ground.

the orange of the reflected light is really beautiful, and reflecting off the trees brings out so much of the contrasting colours.

its a part of the country I really enjoy and its calm and quietness are what I look forward to getting back home to
